Top Car Movies of the Millennium: Portughes’ Pick

A car movie can mean anything from a racing flick to a road movie to a full-on action flick in which cars are one of the main features. In our list, we regard car movies as a film where the car plays a key role in the way a character interacts with the world – be it a weapon, a dream, a way of escape or even a form of accommodation.
As car enthusiasts and leading providers of services related to car detailing in Malta, we at Portughes share our pick of our favourite car movies since the millennium!

The Fast & The Furious (2001)

Having been followed by 7 sequels (so far) since the original movie, some may argue that The Fast & The Furious franchise has been overly dragged out. But what car movie blog would be complete without a mention of one of the highest-grossing film series of all time? The series is largely concerned with illegal street racing, heists and espionage, featuring lots of fast cars and explosive action. You can’t call yourself a car enthusiast if you haven’t watched at least a few of this series.

The Transporter (2002)

In this fun action flick, Jason Statham takes the role of Frank Martin, an ex-special forces operator and expert driver who (as the name of the film implies) is paid to transport any kind of goods – no questions asked. Complications arise when he is hired to kidnap the daughter of a Chinese crime lord. Who would’ve thought?

Collateral (2004)

This movie pairs a contract killer (Tom Cruise) with a Los Angeles taxi driver (Jamie Foxx), who is offered 600 dollars to transport Vincent (Cruise) around the city during an evening of the hitman’s work. The movie initially portrays the taxi as a safe cocoon through which the driver experiences the world, to one that turns into an unexpected taxi ride from hell.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Mad Max is a larger-than-life story set in an alternate world, where an energy crisis has caused the world to become a desert wasteland and civilisation to collapse. In this most recent instalment of the series, the dystopia is even darker, the filmmaking more stylised, and the stunts crazier. Even the lead (Tom Hardy) is grimmer than before.
Amid its relentless, adrenaline-charged action sequences and mind-blowing car stunts, we learn a lot about the characters that inhabit this terrifying world. The director’s dark dystopian visions, paired with his stylized filmmaking, make for a thrilling two-hour edge-of-your-seat madness!
